Jaialdi festival in Boise, ID celebrates Basque culture

Think you're going to have a boring weekend? Think again.

Jaialdi, is a week long Basque festival that occurs every five years, is taking over Boise. And you should go.

There seems to be an event to please everyone. Festivities kick off tonight, Tuesday, July 28, with a free concert streaming from Bilboa, Spain. Viewers can enjoy the concert either at the Basque Center, or at jaialdi.com. Or, stroll on down to the Basque Block on Tuesday or Wednesday night for the Welcome to Boise event. Attendees can enjoy food, drink, and music in downtown Boise from 5pm to 11pm.

Sports enthusiasts will enjoy Thursday night's event at CenturyLink Arena. Watch as participants from the Basque country test their strength by lifting up to 400 pounds. Woodchoppers and traditional farm sports competitors will also be vying for the spotlight with their feats of strength. Tickets are $15 each, so you'd better buy fast if you want to attend.

Basque culture will be on display Thursday and Friday from 12pm to 12am at the Basque Block in downtown Boise. If you love to dance, then you have plenty of options on either Thursday (Basque Block, 8:45pm), Saturday (Expo Idaho, 9pm-1am), or Sunday (Basque Block, 8pm).

Attend a traditional Basque service on Sunday at St. Mark’s at 7 p.m.

Not able to attend all of the events? Then you might want to swing by Expo Idaho (formerly known as the fairgrounds) on Saturday (10am to 6pm) or Sunday (11am to 5pm) for Basque-ing at Expo Idaho. You'll get to watch traditional dancing, browse booths for eclectic offerings, and taste food and drink from the Basque area (did someone say chorizo?). The kids will also love it, as there will be a sports arena for events, and a display of sheepwagons.

For the full list of events, and ticket information, check out jaialdi.com.

We hope to see you there!
