Alexa Rose Foundation in Boise Idaho

It’s been three years since Boise lost one if its most creative citizens. But Alexa Rose Howell's legacy lives on through the Alexa Rose Foundation which provides grants to local artists.

Alexa Rose Howell, wife of developer Ken Howell, was a local artist who worked hard to give other creators a chance to be seen and discovered. She opened the Gallery Alexa Rose in 2008 to provide a venue for the artists she believed should have such an opportunity. Even after her death, her legacy continues in the foundation named after her.

Visual artists from Ada and Canyon Counties are invited to apply for grants ranging from $250 to $5,000 that can be used for different expenses. Past awardees have used the money for classes, travel expenses, conference participation costs, teacher training, and even for supplies toward a specific piece of work.

In 2015, $67,000 was given to local artists who demonstrated that they would use the money to further their artistic development. Many different mediums were represented, including painting, photography, printing, glasswork, welding and sculpting.

Most artists were at the beginning of their careers or reaching a significant point in their celebrity. Many were already well-known and established, so don’t think this grant isn’t for you if you have been lucky enough to create a name for yourself in your genre. Prove you have a need and you will be considered.

Applicants are required to submit an application form, a one-page narrative answering given questions, a budget with description and supporting materials, and a file of previous work. You can apply online on the Alexa Rose Foundation website. The deadline for submission is March 25 at 4 p.m. Applicants can expect an email after the requested documents have been received.
