Idaho Candle Company in Boise, Idaho

There's a sweet piece of history sitting in the BoDo area of downtown Boise.

Built in 1909, the Idaho Candy Company building stands tall and proud on 8th Street in downtown. This building is more than a local business (though we have a great love for shopping locally), it's also a part of the city's past.

Idaho Candy Company is the creation of T.O. Smith, a candy maker who came to Boise to help build the Dewey Palace Hotel in Nampa. After the hotel was completed, Smith found himself without a job and turned to creating candy. The business started in 1901 with him selling it door-to-door in shoeboxes, and quickly turned into him having 17 employees creating candy to sell.

When the 23,00 square feet building was built in 1909, it was considered the most modern building in Boise at the time. That same building is where the company still creates its candy today, and even some of the machinery used for production is from the 1900s.

The company now belongs to the Wagers family. It was purchased by John Wagers, an accountant from Nampa, in 1984. His son, Dave, is the current president of Idaho Candy Company.

If you haven't visited this piece of Boise history, you can stop by the building at 412 8th Street on Monday through Friday, from 7am to 4pm. The Idaho Candy Company's retail shop has candy and t-shirts for sale to the general public. You can buy several types of candy, such as an Idaho Spud Bar, created in 1918, or some Owyhee Butter Toffee, which has been in production since 1925. If you aren't in Idaho, but would still like a taste of the state, you can buy Idaho Candy Company products online. These items would be a great gift to either introduce people to Idaho products, or as a memory of their time in the state.
